According to the financial report of Hanoi Beer – Alcohol – Beverage Corporation (Habeco – BHN), revenue in the first quarter of the year increased by more than 10% to nearly VND 1,320 billion. After deducting the cost of goods sold, the company’s gross profit was nearly VND 267 billion, an increase of 8.5%. However, Habeco suffered a net loss of nearly VND 21 billion, 5.7 times higher than in the same period last year. After three vibrant business quarters, the company has returned to making losses, the largest since the first quarter of 2020. The negative profit is due to Bia Hanoi’s increased investment in market activities. In the first three months of the year, selling expenses increased by 13% to more than VND 230 billion. The company spent more than VND 34 billion on sales staff expenses, VND 6 billion more than in the same period last year. The most costly expense was advertising, promotion, and support, at nearly VND 105 billion, an increase of VND 30 billion. This is also the largest expense in all of Habeco’s business operations. In addition, the decline in financial revenue also affected the business results of the northern beer company. During the period, BHN recorded nearly VND 38 billion in this item, 16% lower than in the same period last year due to the lower interest rate on mobilized funds. The company is currently depositing about VND 3,464 billion in the bank. Bia Hanoi has had to spend heavily on advertising and promotion in the context of the State’s strict management measures to reduce the harmful effects of beer and alcohol. According to the Vietnam Beer – Alcohol – Beverage Association (VBA), the beer industry saw an 11% decrease in revenue and a 23% decrease in pre-tax profit in 2023 due to the control policies in Decree 100. In addition, the sector has also been affected by people tightening their spending, rising raw material prices, and increasing market competition. A subsidiary of Habeco, Bia Hanoi – Hai Duong (HAD), reported a loss of more than VND 1 billion, five times higher than in the same period last year. HAD said this is a result of the increase in the USD exchange rate when purchasing raw materials, decreased consumption due to the weather, and the impact of Decree 100. With the market forecast to remain negative, Habeco has set a target for this year of VND 6,543 billion in revenue from the sale of main products and a post-tax profit of VND 202 billion, both lower than last year’s results. With the results of the first quarter, the company is still far from the above profit target. Similarly, at the recent annual meeting, the leaders of Saigon Beer (Sabeco – SAB) said that people are still tightening their spending while input costs remain high, and Decree 100 is expected to continue to hinder the recovery of the beer industry. In addition, the Ministry of Finance has proposed adjusting the excise tax rate for some products that are harmful to health, including alcohol and beer, which is expected to continue to put pressure on businesses in the industry. In the first quarter of the year, Sabeco recorded a profit of nearly VND 1,024 billion due to the unfavorable business situation of its joint ventures and associates.
